Georgia’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Georgia is one of the ancient countries in the world and has numerous historical, spiritual and entertaining sites to offer tourists. There are 3 astonishing monuments, that are included in the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage in Georgia: Historical Monuments of Mtskheta, Upper Svaneti and Gelati Monastery. 

Historical Monuments of Mtskheta

Situated not far from Tbilisi, Mtskheta once was Georgia’s capital (from 3rd century BC to 5th century AD). It is one of the most ancient urban areas and the “Holy City” of Georgia. Here is located the main head of Georgian Orthodox Church.

Upper Svaneti

Gelati Monastery

The outstanding Gelati Monastery is one of the precious treasures of Georgia, which is located near Kutaisi. This Monumental complex was built in the 12th century on top of a hill, by the order of Georgian king David IV. This architectural medieval monument was home for many famous Georgian thinkers, scholars and theologians, who worked not only in Georgia but also abroad. Later it became the first academy of Mathematics and Sciences in Georgia.

The inner walls of this admirable monument are painted with biblical scenarios, for decades the priests of Gelati preserved numerous vital manuscripts. At night the Monastery is covered by a vail made of billions of stars that are shining brightly over the monastery complex.
