Georgia has been on the wish list of many internationally recognized magazines and travel advisor websites in recent years. With the rich cultural and historical heritage, breathtaking landscapes and nature, unique traditions and cuisine, Georgia marks its bold place on the map for holiday planners. Though pandemic has significantly affected tourism industry globally and in Georgia too, the country is getting ready for the restart which is hopefully just around the corner now.
When in Georgia, it is essential to know how you can get around, both in Tbilisi, and the countryside. There are many transportation options for you to choose from, and in this article we have put together some tips and useful information for you to consider, when planning your next trip to Georgia.
There are several options for public transportation in Georgia. You can choose from buses, metro, and minibuses called "Marshrutka." While being very affordable price-wise, you should keep in mind that public transportation in Georgia comes with several cons.
Most of the time, the buses and minibuses are not equipped with air conditioners. So it will be a bit hard to handle the summer heat while transporting from one place to another. They also might be overcrowded most of the time, so you might not find an available seat. The buses operating in Tbilisi cost 40 tetri. It is around 15 cents, making it the most affordable option for city rides.
Recently, the government has bought modern buses that are available only in Tbilisi. They have built-in air conditioners, allowing you to have cool air in the bus throughout your ride.
Thanks to its reliable, fast, and affordable operation, you can easily get around Tbilisi by metro as well. Before using the metro, you should get the metro card by paying only 2 lari which is about 50 cents. The fee for each ride is about 20 cents no matter the distance. Even though the train wagons themselves are dated and you can’t find an air conditioner there, they are still a pretty fast and acceptable means of transportation to get around in Tbilisi.
If you want to reach the remote parts of Georgia, the Georgian railway will be very helpful. It not only covers almost all the regions but also there are trains for traveling to neighboring countries Armenia and Azerbaijan. The price of a train ticket may vary depending on the route you choose and the class you want to get. You can get the train tickets online and pay by credit card after choosing the destination of your ride and the seats.
Taxis are one of the most commonly used options especially in the cities. The rates are pretty affordable as the average ride in the city can cost you around 2-3$. However, there are pros and cons when you plan to use taxis during your holiday in Georgia. First of all, you need to know that it is very easy to catch a taxi cab on the street, but usually the cars will not be in great technical conditions, might not have an air conditioning and sometimes you can find the interior of the car not properly clean.
As an alternative, there are apps to order a taxi like Uber, but they are called GG Taxi or Yandex Taxi. When using their services, you can check how much you will pay for your ride when choosing the location, you want to reach, and you can also pay by credit card. When ordering a taxi through apps, you have higher chances to have better experience during your ride.
